Advice for People Looking to Build their Brands Online

This is something I share with every person I talk to who’s looking to build their brand online. I’ve seen it to be one of the most important things I’ve learned in growing Car Window Poetry, as well as one of the biggest keys to its success.

There are lots of people who have incredible magic to share. We know some of these people, but there are so many of them we’ve never heard of. Maybe it’s because they don’t want to be heard of, but I believe, for a lot of people, they want to impact others; they just don’t know how to get the word out about who they are and the value they can offer through their gifts.

BUT, I have good news! We have more tools than ever before through social media that we can use to share our stories with people and give them an opportunity to become followers, and even fans, of our work.

So, how do you start?

Commit to doing one thing each day that goes towards further telling your story.

Micro-thoughts on Facebook. Blog posts on Medium. Instagram direct messages. Just talk about what you’re doing, and invite other people to join you on the journey.

You might be thinking, ‘Isn’t it annoying to talk about what you’re doing all the time?’ It doesn’t have to be. That’s why it’s so important to seek how you can add value to people online.

In a previous post, I talked about how what you say online should empower people to live fuller lives offline. That’s what I’ve sought to do with Car Window Poetry.

When I started CWP last August, I had no vision of others participating in it from around the world. I just set out to do one thing each day that would go towards informing more people about the project. I knew that, in order for people to hear the story, I had to tell it.

As I began consistently sharing the story of CWP online through Facebook, Instagram and blog posts, crazy things happened. People wanted to bring the project to their cities. Friends reached out and asked how they could help. Two months in, I even got messaged by a friend on Facebook who wanted to pitch a story about CWP to his bosses at NBC Nightly News.

In the process of consistently telling the CWP story, it has grown to all 50 U.S. states and over 50 countries worldwide with over 1,800 card downloads. In addition to NBC Nightly News, we’ve been featured on HLN’s MichaeLA and various local news outlets nationwide — all in less than a year.

So my advice for people looking to build their brands online is to stop waiting for people to hear about you. Go tell them. Nobody is going to hear your story unless you tell it — EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Add value to people through consistent storytelling, and eventually people will tell the story for you.

Much love!
